Safe and Sound

It's my opinion that simple pleasures are what make life great. With all the other craziness that we all inevitably deal with every day in one way or another, it's what gives us some respite. Some happiness and joy, no strings attached.

You know, like reading a book. Doing a crossword puzzle. Long walks on nice days. A really, really good glass of wine. (Ok yes, these all happen to be very specific to me.. but you get the idea!)

While I try to fit as many of these simple pleasures into my daily life as possible, I experienced one a few weeks ago that was extra nice.. and all it consisted of was listening to a relatively new song with a new ear and a new sense of appreciation.

Here's where you ask what the heck I'm rambling on about.

Well for starters, I've always enjoyed the simple pleasure of discovering new music. And who doesn't? You know that moment when you realize you really, really love a new-to-you band/singer/musician, can't get enough of them, buy their album, and devour everything as soon as you possibly can?

Yes, yes you do. I know you do.

I've had that with a few bands recently.. Of Monsters and Men and The Lumineers, to name a few. There's also been this one song that keeps playing on Sirius XM's Alt Nation station called Safe and Sound by Capital Cities.

First off, it's catchy as hell.

(I very much hope you are listening to it!)

Second, the lyrics are so incredibly uplifting, and even, dare I say it, empowering. Which is something I didn't realize until they featured a short "behind the scenes" look from the band, commenting how it was written to be a positive song - how even if the world is ending, it will still be ok.

And honestly? That's the moment when I started loving the song. When I really listened to the lyrics.. I couldn't help but have this big, goofy grin on my face. I mean, how often do you really get a good, catchy, uplifting song??

I could lift you up
I could show you what you want to see
and take you where you want to be.

You could be my luck
Even if the sky is falling down
I know that we'll be safe and sound.

I could fill your cup
You know my river won't evaporate
This world we still appreciate.

You could be my luck
Even in a hurricane of frowns
I know that we'll be safe and sound.

Safe and sound
Safe and sound
Hold your ground
Safe and sound
I could show you love
In a tidal wave of mystery
You'll still be standing next to me

You could be my luck
Even if we're six feet underground
I know that we'll be safe and sound

Safe and sound.. we're safe and sound.

Needless to say, this song is on repeat for the time being - especially when I seem to be having an extra rough day.

What are your simple pleasures? Have you found any new music lately that really speaks to you?
